In honor of the Meadows Museum’s sixtieth anniversary, Movies with the Meadows will present three films from the decade of our founding, the 1960s. These films, whether drama, comedy, or satire, capture the spirit of the decade in Spain. All films are screened in the Bob and Jean Smith Auditorium.

El Verdugo (The Executioner) (1963) directed by Luis García Berlanga

This masterpiece of black humor is a scathing critique of Franco-era
values. An undertaker marries an executioner’s daughter and reluctantly takes over her father’s job so the family can keep their government-allotted apartment. A furiously funny personal attack on capital punishment, El verdugo evaded the state censors who sought to suppress it and today is regarded as one of the greatest Spanish films of all time.

Spanish with English subtitles | Satirical Comedy | 90 minutes

This film, while not rated, is intended for mature audiences only. We encourage audiences to research all films before attending a screening at the museum, and if you are unable to use your ticket, please contact our Visitor Services Desk at 214-768-8587.
